In this paper, a low complexity data demodulation algorithm is proposed that requires time of arrival information of the received signal exclusively. As an application example, the algorithm is applied to an ultra-wideband impulse radio communication system with pulse position modulation. The algorithm is insensitive to a common time delay for all pulses, that means, it does not require an accurate synchronization between the transmitter and the receiver. For the performance estimation, only a symbol synchronization is assumed, i.e., that there is a priori knowledge which pulse marks the beginning of a received data symbol. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated for straightforward time of arrivals estimators, such as a maximum detector or a threshold detector. It is shown that the proposed algorithm outperforms a least squares algorithm in all considered scenarios. In particular, an increased robustness against additive white Gaussian noise, impulse like noise, and multiuser interference is demonstrated as well as an improved performance for multipath propagation channels.  相似文献

A goal in the field of nanoscale optics is the fabrication of nanostructures with strong directional light scattering at visible frequencies. Here, the synthesis of Mie-resonant core–shell particles with overlapping electric and magnetic dipole resonances in the visible spectrum is demonstrated. The core consists of silicon surrounded by a lower index silicon oxynitride (SiOxNy) shell of an adjustable thickness. Optical spectroscopies coupled to Mie theory calculations give the first experimental evidence that the relative position and intensity of the magnetic and electric dipole resonances are tuned by changing the core–shell architecture. Specifically, coating a high-index particle with a low-index shell coalesces the dipoles, while maintaining a high scattering efficiency, thus generating broadband forward scattering. This synthetic strategy opens a route toward metamaterial fabrication with unprecedented control over visible light manipulation.  相似文献

Recent advances in computing technology have brought multimedia information processing to prominence. The ability to digitize, store, retrieve, process, and transport analog information in digital form has changed the dimensions of information handling. Several architectural and network configurations have been proposed for efficient and reliable digital video delivery systems. However, these proposals succeed only in addressing subsets of the whole problem. In this paper, we discuss the characteristics of video services. These include Cable Television, Pay-Per-View, and Video Repository Centers. We also discuss requirements for Video On Demand services. With respect to these video services, we analyze two important video properties: image quality and response time. We discuss and present configurations of a Digital Video Delivery System (DVDS) from three general system components - servers, clients, and connectivities. Pertinent issues in developing each component are also analyzed. We also present an architecture of a DVDS that can support the various functionalities that exist in the various video services. Lastly, we discuss data allocation strategies which impact performance of interactive video on demand (IVOD). We present preliminary results from a study using a limited form of mirroring to support high performance IVOD.  相似文献

Adaptive Optics (AO) systems enable to compensate the adverse effects of atmospheric turbulence on ground-based telescopes’ images in real time, using a deformable mirror (DM) inserted in the telescope’s optical path, and measurements provided by a wavefront sensor (WFS). This paper revisits minimum-variance (MV) control design for astronomical AO systems in a state-space framework. It presents a survey of the modeling and control issues arising in this multi-variable disturbance rejection problem. In a linear time-invariant framework, and under some mild assumptions, the optimal solution to MV control for AO systems is shown to be a discrete-time LQG controller. This result holds for a DM with instantaneous response, and for a fairly general class of DM’s dynamics. The state-space approach is extended to Wide-field Adaptive Optics (WfAO) configurations involving several DMs and/or WFSs. Integral-action control used in existing AO systems is compared with the LQG controller. Experimental WfAO results obtained on a laboratory test bench are presented, showing significant improvement in performance. Finally, open issues and perspectives of applicative and/or theoretical interests are discussed.  相似文献

The first results on a simple new process for the direct fabrication of one-dimensional superlattices using common CVD chambers are presented. The experiments were carried out in a 200?mm industrial Centura reactor (Applied Materials). Low dimensionality and superlattices allow a significant increase in the figure of merit of thermoelectrics by controlling the transport of phonons and electrons. The monocrystalline nanowires produced according to this process are both one-dimensional and present heterostructures, with very thin layers (40?nm) of Si and SiGe. Concentrations up to 30?at.% Ge were obtained in the SiGe parts. Complementary techniques including transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) in bright field and high angle annular dark field (HAADF STEM), and energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy (EF-TEM) were used to characterize the nanoheterostructures.  相似文献

Electrical monitoring of DNA hybridization is one way to reduce the cost and size of the DNA chip reader in comparison with the more classical optical detection. Within electrical methods, electrochemical detection shows very high performances in terms of accuracy and sensitivity, especially when an enzymatic accumulation is used to amplify the signal. However, signal multiplexing for miniaturized systems based on both enzymatic accumulation and electrochemical detection remains challenging due to the Brownian diffusion of the detected product of the enzymatic reaction. We present here a DNA chip with electrical detection based on the following sequence: (i) hybridization of nucleic acids and washing in a liquid layer as usual, (ii) formation of independent nanodroplets on each detection site, (iii) enzymatic accumulation in each droplet avoiding cross-contamination between neighboring sites, and (iv) electrochemical detection of the product accumulated during the enzymatic reaction. The simple and fast transition from the liquid layer (hybridization step) to an array of nanodroplets (enzymatic accumulation and detection steps) was performed through the filling of the hybridization chamber with a solution containing the enzymatic substrates, the drawing of this solution, and the simultaneous creation of droplets thanks to retention areas based on circular rims or hydrophilic rings. Using this approach, hybridization is achieved in a liquid layer as usual, followed by the enzymatic accumulation in nanodroplets to avoid the cross-talk between neighboring sites. Moreover, working in droplets enables a fast increase in the concentration of the product generated by the enzymatic reaction and thus an improvement of the detection limit of the system.  相似文献

A popular approach for computing photorealistic images of virtual objects requires applying reflectance profiles measured from real surfaces, introducing several challenges: the memory needed to faithfully capture realistic material reflectance is large, the choice of materials is limited to the set of measurements, and image synthesis using the measured data is costly. Typically, this data is either compressed by projecting it onto a subset of its linear principal components or by applying non‐linear methods. The former requires many components to faithfully represent the input reflectance, whereas the latter necessitates costly extrapolation algorithms. We learn an underlying, low‐dimensional non‐linear reflectance manifold amenable to rapid exploration and rendering of real‐world materials. We can express interpolated materials as linear combinations of the measured data, despite them lying on an inherently non‐linear manifold. This allows us to efficiently interpolate and extrapolate measured BRDFs, and to render directly from the manifold representation. We exploit properties of Gaussian process latent variable models and use our representation for high‐performance and offline rendering with interpolated real‐world materials.  相似文献

We introduce a compact hierarchical procedural model that combines feature‐based primitives to describe complex terrains with varying level of detail. Our model is inspired by skeletal implicit surfaces and defines the terrain elevation function by using a construction tree. Leaves represent terrain features and they are generic parametrized skeletal primitives, such as mountains, ridges, valleys, rivers, lakes or roads. Inner nodes combine the leaves and subtrees by carving, blending or warping operators. The elevation of the terrain at a given point is evaluated by traversing the tree and by combining the contributions of the primitives. The definition of the tree leaves and operators guarantees that the resulting elevation function is Lipschitz, which speeds up the sphere tracing used to render the terrain. Our model is compact and allows for the creation of large terrains with a high level o detail using a reduced set of primitives. We show the creation of different kinds of landscapes and demonstrate that our model allows to efficiently control the shape and distribution of landform features.  相似文献

Water at the polymer/substrate interface is often the major cause of adhesion loss in coatings, adhesives, and fiber-reinforced polymer composites. This study critically assesses the relationship between the interfacial water layer and the adhesion loss in epoxy/siliceous substrate systems. Both untreated and silane-treated Si substrates and untreated and silane-treated E-glass fibers were used. Thickness of the interfacial water layer was measured on epoxy/Si systems by Fourier transform infrared-multiple total internal reflection (FTIR-MTIR) spectroscopy. Adhesion loss of epoxy/Si systems and epoxy/E-glass fiber composites was measured by peel adhesion and short-beam shear tests, respectively. Little water accumulation at the epoxy/Si substrate interface was observed for silane-treated Si substrates, but about 10 monolayers of water accumulated at the interface between the epoxy and the untreated Si substrate following 100 h of exposure at 24 °C. More than 70% of the initial epoxy/untreated Si system peel strength was lost within 75 h of exposure, compared with 20% loss after 600 h for the silane-treated Si samples. Shear strength loss in composites made with untreated E-glass fiber was nearly twice that of composites fabricated with silane-treated fiber after 6 months of immersion in 60 °C water. Further, the silane-treated composites remained transparent, but the untreated fiber composites became opaque after water exposure. Evidence from FTIR-MTIR spectroscopy, adhesion loss, and visual observation strongly indicated that a water layer at the polymer/substrate interface is mostly responsible for the adhesion loss of epoxy/untreated siliceous substrate systems and epoxy/untreated glass fiber composites and that FTIR-MTIR is a viable technique to reliably and conveniently assess the adhesion loss attributable to water sorption at the interface.  相似文献
